Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the triumph of the Mexican army over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. 
Just in case you wanted to know.

Okay, so, yes...this picture is very similar to the one I did last year for Cinco de Mayo. The same doll (Milky Way Sugar), wearing the same dress, in front of the same background. The guitar is a better prop than the felt taco she was holding last year, so that's an improvement! I was really out of ideas for this. Here's last year's photo, below.

This is Eve, my Milky Way Sugar Blythe doll. I was hoping to show her posing with some half-size souvenir maracas my husband brought back to me from a trip near the Mexican boarder, but I couldn't get Eve to hold them in any sort of convincing way.  So I had to go with the back-up plan: a felt taco.

I love how this photo came out! Usually I try to make the dolls look like they are alive and involved in some activity; this time, the doll is clearly seen as a doll--what a concept! I hope to do many more still lifes, so I'm calling this one #1.

And, here's how the photo looked before PicMonkey helped me change it to black and white. I think I prefer this one...but the theme for the day was "black and white", so the first one is the "official" photo for today. So okay, I'm calling this one Still Life With Doll #2.

Setsubun

Eve is totally focused on having the best Setsubun EVER!!

What? You've never heard of Setsubun?? Haha, neither had I, until I read the themes for the Blythe-a-Day Feb. 2015 Flick'r group! Here's the explanation from the Japan National Tourism Organization website:

Setsubun is the day preceding risshun that is the first day of spring according to the old Japanese calendar, or the so-called lunar calendar. On the day of Setsubun, there is the custom of throwing roasted soybeans while chanting "In with Fortune! Out with Evil" in order to prevent evil ogres from entering one's house. It is believed that the ogres are warded off by throwing beans, and that good fortune will then come to one's home. On this day, events with entertainers and athletes are held at shrines all over the country. According to Japanese tradition, if you eat the same number of beans as your age, you will enjoy a year of good health.
