Just Another Day in Pleasantville

Welcome to Pleasantville, where the skies are always blue, the animals can talk, and kindness rules the day.

My sweet dolly friend Angie Coppi sent me a Christmas package full of wonderful goodies; two of them were the inspiration for this photo: the beautiful Christmas tree hat by KaChu on Etsy, and the sweet little bird ornament. Thank you Angie! More pictures to come!

Vera Needs...Something

I've been thinking about my Vera Florentine Blythe doll, and wondering why I don't love her as much now as when I first saw her. Her makeup is very strong--orange cheeks, peach lips, yellow eyelids--and her stock outfit (orange hat and blouse with blue overalls) really goes well with her makeup. But when I took off her orange hat, she seemed rather drab. I just realized that is because her hair color is too plain, and without her hat SHE looks too plain! In addition, her short hairstyle with the very short bangs, curly ends, and flat top, is desperately in need of SOMETHING...

So the solution is that Vera must always wear a hat! (Or possibly a huge bow or big, colorful hairband.) I'm so glad I realized this, because now I can love her again. Here she is in two different outfits with hats. So cute!

A Hat for Every Head

Sometimes the girl wears the hat,
sometimes the hat wears the girl.

When I first got into Blythe, I noticed that there was a huge variety of hats, hairbands, and fascinators available for her, which made perfect sense to me: since her head is her most prominent feature, why not play it up? I started buying and making a lot of hats, with the idea that I wanted something fun and different to go on the head of each of my girls. But as I got more into taking photos of them, I realized that the hat often gets in the way of the little story I want to tell with the picture--a big hat can be a distraction.  Now, I only use a hat in a picture when it helps tell the story; or, as in the case of this photo, when the hats ARE the story!

Our Favorite Hat(s)

Favorite Hat

There is NO WAY these girls could decide on just one hat that is everyone's favorite. So they took a vote, and these 7 hats were the winners. When the Sonny Angels noticed what was going on, they insisted on being in the picture too, because, of course, they wear their favorite hats all the time.

Hats on Twins

Here are those hats I couldn't find yesterday--Megipupu on the left, and Lalatroop on the right. They look great on my twins, Daphne and Waverly.

These dolls are Candy Carnival, which was released in 2005. They are identical in almost every way except for their bangs. Daphne, on the left, has bangs that are noticeably shorter and flatter than Waverly's.

Put a Hat on It

With their big ol' heads, Blythe dolls are perfect hat models. I've been collecting hats for them almost as long as I've been collecting the dolls (nearly 3 years). Here are three of my favorites--but what am I saying, I love ALL the hats I've collected!

Here's my hat collection (minus the ones on Bonnie, Claire, and Heidi!):

Oh dear, I just realized that some are missing. Where's my Megipupu? My Lalatroop? I'm going to have to do some digging in my dolly boxes.  All of these hats, PLUS missing ones, will show up on the dolls here on my blog, sooner or later.
