Some girls love diamonds, some prefer pearls.

The Sleeping Gypsy

There is a contest on Facebook, in the doll group called Blythe Info Uncensored, to recreate a famous painting using Blythe dolls. I've been wanting to do such a photo since I heard about it more than a week ago, but I had trouble finding just the right painting to inspire me, so I waited for inspiration to strike. I finally opened a book we have on our bookshelf, "1001 Paintings to See Before you Die," and that's where I came across "The Sleeping Gypsy" by Henri Rousseau. I love the graphic nature of the painting, and the startling image of the lion behind the sleeper. As soon as I saw this I knew I wanted to use it for my recreation, because I have just the perfect lion on hand! So here it is. The Blythe doll is Cherry Beach Sunset. I closed her eyes by pulling her string tight and then wrapping it around her arm (which is hidden in the fabric of her garment). The sky, mountain range, and ground, as well as her garment and the pillow behind her head, are all pieces of fabric.

Summer Solstice

"It's the summer solstice, you say? We had no idea."

I'm happy with how this sun turned out. It was easy to make; I just cut long triangles of construction paper using my paper cutter, and then traced around a plate and cut out the yellow circle for the center. I arranged it on the floor, on a large piece of orange fabric from my stash, and voila! 

A Pineapple Princess

The old saying should be changed to "A pineapple a day keeps the doctor away," because Gidget eats this fruit regularly, and she has never been to a physician!

Don't let her fool you--Gidget is not Pineapple Princess, but Cherry Beach Sunset in Pineapple Princess's stock outfit. 

Shades

As soon as they put on their shades, they feel totally cool.

They are Cool Pool Lemonade (in her stock dress and sunglasses) and Cherry Beach Sunset (wearing a dress by an unknown maker, and someone else's sunglasses--but I don't remember whose.) I bought Cherry Beach as soon as she came out because I didn't have a tanned girl in my collection. She is great in every way! I resisted Cool Pool as long as I could, simply because I don't use Middies in my photos as much as I do my Neos...but then, when I got tickets to Blythe Con Brooklyn, and the theme was "tanned," I quickly bought her so I could bring the two of them with me. When the time came, however, I decided to pack light, and Cherry Beach was my only Con doll!

BlytheCon Brooklyn, Here We Come!

Tomorrow, Oct 22nd, is when BlytheCon Brooklyn happens!

I've decided to travel light: one doll (Gidget, my Cherry Beach Sunset), one bag (to carry tickets, a map, snacks, and money), and most importantly, my very helpful husband, who will be instrumental in getting me to the Con. We will leave our house in Virginia shortly after 4:00 a.m. tomorrow, and, since the train doesn't leave Williamsburg early enough in the morning, we will drive to Union Station in Washington DC and from there, catch a train to New York City. Then we will take the subway to Brooklyn, arriving at the venue around noon. When everything is over at the end of the day, we will travel back to Virginia, arriving home around 1:00 a.m. It will be a long day, but a fun one! In the coming week I'm looking forward to posting a lot of pictures from the event.

Getting Ready

Preparing for a trip is half the fun!

Gidget is preparing to come with me to BlytheCon Brooklyn on Sunday October 22nd. I bought tickets many months ago, even though I wasn't sure if we would actually go...but everything has fallen into place, so my husband and I will be on the train bright and early that Sunday morning, heading for Brooklyn! Gidget (Cherry Beach Sunset) is the obvious choice to come with us, since the theme doll for the Con is "tan dolls". There is room in my doll carrier for one more, so I may also bring my most special girl, my Kenner, Jane.

Near the Water

For today's theme, "Water", I packed up a couple of Blythes and drove along the York River until we came to a pull-over spot with a clear view of the water. I had brought a wooden crate for a seat for the dolls, so I put that on the grass in front of my car, arranged a doll on it, and started shooting pictures. The pictures came out okay, but not great. I was in a hurry because I didn't want to attract attention, and my camera is not great outside because the only way to see what you are shooting is the screen on the back of the camera, which is hard to see in bright light. I much prefer the controlled environment of an indoor photo shoot, and my camera works better there too. Looking at these, I wish I could have gotten closer to the water, as it is really such a small part of each picture. 

This is Bridget (Allegra Champagne) wearing a Blythe Happy dress. Out of all the pictures I took of her, this is my favorite because of the sun shining on her wavy hair. 

This is Gidget (Cherry Beach Sunset) wearing the stock dress and head wrap from Pineapple Princess.  The sun was so bright at her back that her skin tone looks extra dark in the shade. I love her profile in this picture. 

Still Summer

It may be September, but  Autumn doesn't begin until the 22nd.

Hello, Sunshine!

I didn't get the new Blythe doll, Pineapple Princess, because she is very similar to Cherry Beach Sunset, which I do have. But in the past few days, so many people on Facebook have been posting pictures of their new Pineapple Princess that it makes me wish I'd grabbed her when the pre-orders were open! Rather than obsess about what I don't have, though, I've decided to focus on what I DO have: my pretty Cherry Beach Sunset, Gidget. 

Contrast

There is beauty in contrast.

These are my darkest and lightest Blythe dolls: Cherry Beach Sunset, whose skin tone is "mocha", and Cousin Olivia, whose skin tone is "very fair". I saw them side-by-side on the shelf and needed to photograph them together!

Beach Girl

Gidget submitted the wining slogan for the new clothing 
company, Mango Season, and she won a modeling contract! 

This ad, from her first photo shoot, will soon be in all the fashion magazines. 

This photo is for the theme "shirts with words on them."

My friend Sara Ricer made the outfit as part of a swap we did a few years ago. She made up her own brand (Mango Season), and carved a rubber stamp to put the logo on the shirt and bag. She also made the cute denim skirt with a frayed hem and colorful patches. 

Gidget (Cherry Beach Sunset) is wearing her stock hairband--which was surprisingly difficult to put on in such a way that it would stay in place and look okay!

Cute Stockings

Gidget had to dig through all her drawers to find 
just the right stockings to wear; but the effort 
was totally worth it because 
they coordinated with her outfit perfectly.

She is my Cherry Beach Sunset Blythe doll. The cute stockings arrived as an unexpected gift from a Facebook friend--thank you Julie Blake!!!

Cherries

According to Gidget, life is just a bowl of cherries!
Yesterday, my sweet husband brought me a big bag of beautiful cherries--my favorite fruit! My first thought was that I needed to take a dolly picture some of with them before I ate them. Yes, I am doll obsessed!

Curly Blue Babe and Cherry Beach Sunset


I was super excited to find these cherry boots on eBay recently! I've been looking for the boots or the "Knees and Toes Sweet" set, which includes the boots, for ages. This was listed as "blythe cute shoes boots original takara shoe set". NO mention of cherries--no wonder I couldn't find it!

The Tug of War is the most popular activity at the annual church picnic. Everyone is welcome to participate, no matter how big or small. You can hear the team captains shouting, "All together now--PULL!!!"

Regret

Gidget is seized with a sharp pang of regret at having signed up for such a heavy course load, when she sees her sister heading out to the mall, and she, Gidget, has to stay home and study!
